What is alcohol ink and alcohol ink art?Alcohol ink is a highly pigmented, fast-drying medium that is used for a variety of artistic purposes. It is made up of alcohol (usually isopropyl alcohol) and dye or pigment, and is known for its vibrant colors and ability to create unique effects when combined with other materials and techniques. Alcohol ink can be used on a wide range of surfaces, including synthetic paper, glass, plastic, metal, and more, and is a popular choice for creating abstract art, mixed media pieces, and DIY projects. Alcohol ink art is a vibrant and dynamic form of visual expression. The inks flow and blend in unpredictable ways, creating vivid and intricate patterns, textures and layers. Artists may use various tools to manipulate the inks including heat or additives to achieve the desired effects. The results can be mesmerizing abstract compositions similar to fluid movement, organic shapes and ethereal landscapes. The translucent nature of the inks allow for stunning colour transitions and depth, making each piece of artwork truly unique.

How does this medium work to create art?Alcohol ink is a highly pigmented, alcohol-based ink that is used to create vibrant and colorful artwork. When applied to non-porous surfaces such as glossy paper, ceramic, metal or glass, the ink spreads and blends in a unique way due to the evaporation of the alcohol. This creates a beautiful and unpredictable effect that makes each piece of alcohol ink art one-of-a-kind. To use alcohol ink, you can simply apply it directly to the surface using a brush, dropper or spray bottle. You can also mix colors together to create new shades or use techniques such as blowing or dripping to create interesting patterns and textures.

Do you need to seal alcohol ink art?Yes, it is highly recommended to seal alcohol ink art to protect it from fading, smudging, and water damage. You can use a clear glossy or matte sealant spray specifically designed for alcohol ink art ensuring the sealant doesn’t reactivate the art. Make sure to follow the instructions on the product label and allow enough drying time before handling your artwork. All original arts at Reimagined are sealed with multiple coats of varnish and then sealed with a UV protectant to help avoid fading.

Where should I hang alcohol ink art to avoid damage?Yes, it is important to consider the placement of your alcohol ink artwork. Alcohol ink art is highly sensitive to direct sunlight as is most artwork. Direct sunlight can cause the colours to fade or even bleach out completely. Consider hanging artwork on interior walls away from windows and areas with direct sunlight. To preserve the quality and vibrancy of your alcohol ink artwork you may also want to consider framing your alcohol ink art with UV-protective glass or acrylic to further protect it from harmful light. My artwork is finished with several coats of varnish that will include a UV varnish to help slow down the effects caused by direct sunlight. Some art will also have additional layers added that include resin and/or gloss gel medium and/or a wax finish. To continue to enjoy your alcohol ink art for many years; like watercolour art, it will always be recommended to avoid direct sunlight.
